The hours, and why they matter

Retail alcohol sales in Thailand are limited to set windows during the day and evening. The practical effect is that the convenience store which sold you beer at 8 PM will decline at 12:30 AM, and the one you walk past mid-afternoon will decline then too.

This is a rule on shops rather than on drinking. Licensed bars and clubs serve within their own hours, so the restriction shapes what you buy on the way somewhere rather than what you can drink when you get there. Rules have changed before and can be tightened around particular dates, so treat the windows above as the usual pattern rather than a guarantee.

What it is actually good for

Setting aside alcohol, 7-Eleven is a genuine part of a Bangkok night and not a punchline. Stores are dense enough that there is almost always one between you and wherever you are going, and they run around the clock.

• —Cold water and electrolyte drinks, which matter more than they sound in this climate
• —Cash withdrawals and phone top-ups when everything else is shut
• —Somewhere air-conditioned and lit to stand while you wait for a car

Before the strip

The common pattern is to eat something before going out rather than after, because RCA venues are built around drinking rather than food, and the strip runs late enough that dinner becomes a distant memory.

If you want the after version instead, Huai Khwang — the district RCA sits in — has a long-standing reputation for street food running well past midnight, and absorbs much of the crowd leaving the strip at closing.
