Almost every Bangkok nightlife scam starts the same way: someone approaches you and redirects your evening. A stranger who tells you a venue is closed, a driver who suggests somewhere better, a tout with a card for a bar you had not heard of. If you decide where you are going before you leave, and go there, you have avoided most of what follows.

The redirection pattern

The most common set-up costs nothing to run and works on people who have just arrived. Someone friendly tells you the place you are heading to is closed today, or is not worth it, and offers somewhere better. The alternative is a venue that pays them for arrivals, and the bill is where you find out.

The defence is not suspicion, it is a plan. Someone with a destination already chosen is a difficult mark, because the offer has nothing to attach to.

Taxis and the meter

The routine version is a refusal to use the meter followed by a fixed price several times higher. It is easiest to decline and take the next car, which in Bangkok is rarely far behind.

A ride-hailing app removes the negotiation entirely by fixing the fare before you get in, which is the main practical reason to arrange data on arrival.

Bills and drinks

Two habits cover most of it.

—Ask what a bottle or table costs before ordering it, not after
—Read the bill, and query anything you did not order rather than assuming a mistake will be corrected quietly
—Watch your drink being poured where you can
—Do not leave a drink and return to it
