What it actually is

A pedestrianised soi a couple of hundred metres long, lined on both sides with go-go bars behind heavy neon. It is one of Bangkok's three concentrated red-light areas and the most compact of them, which is why it reads as a spectacle even to people who have no intention of going into a venue.

It is tourist-facing rather than local, well lit, and busy with people walking through as well as drinking. Both stations are at the Asoke end, which makes it one of the easiest places in the city to reach and to leave.

How the money works

This is the part worth understanding before you go in, because it is not how a normal bar works and the differences are where the surprises come from.

The scam that actually costs people

A tout on the street offers a show for a hundred baht, or free entry. You go up a staircase, order one drink, and when you try to leave the bill is several thousand baht with someone standing between you and the stairs.

This is the single most reliable way to lose real money in Bangkok nightlife, and the defence is absolute rather than situational: never follow a street tout upstairs, anywhere, for anything. A legitimate venue does not need someone on the pavement to bring you to it.
