The rooftop — lebua at State Tower

This is the location the film is remembered for, and the only one most visitors actually seek out. It sits on Silom Road, and both Sky Bar and the Sirocco restaurant occupy the tower's upper floors with an open terrace over the river.

It is a working bar rather than a film set, which has consequences. The dress code is enforced and more strictly than at any nightclub in the city, the terrace closes in bad weather, and drinks cost what a view like that costs. Fifteen years on, people still arrive with screenshots on their phones — and the venue leans into it with a cocktail named after the film.

Chinatown, and the river

Much of the film is set in and around Chinatown, which supplies most of the title-sequence establishing shots. It is a genuinely worthwhile part of Bangkok after dark on its own terms — dense, loud, and better known for street food than for bars.

The chase sequences use the Chao Phraya, which is the same river the dinner cruises run on. Seeing it from the water at night is straightforward and considerably calmer than the film suggests.

What is not real

The hotel room — the wrecked suite from the posters and the marketing — was an interior set constructed in Los Angeles. No Bangkok hotel has that room, and any tour offering to show it to you is selling something else.

Some exteriors in the red-light sequences were shot on Soi Cowboy and dressed as a fictional venue. We note that as a filming fact rather than a recommendation: this site covers clubs and bars, and that area is outside what we write about.

The wedding is not Bangkok at all. It was filmed in Krabi, several hundred kilometres south.

What the film gets wrong about a night here

The Hangover portrays Bangkok nightlife as chaotic, lawless and faintly dangerous. It is a comedy, and that is the joke — but it is worth saying plainly that a normal night out here is not that.

The large clubs are on RCA, a purpose-built strip in Huai Khwang with security, steady foot traffic and everything within walking distance of everything else. Doors enforce dress codes and check ID. Venues close around 2 to 3 AM. The realistic risks are an unmetered taxi and an unexpected bill, not the plot of a film.
