Vaping in Thailand

Leave it at home. Vapes and e-cigarettes are illegal in Thailand — to import, to sell, and to possess — and this is enforced rather than ignored. Penalties reported for possession run to fines in the tens of thousands of baht with confiscation, and bringing one through customs can be treated far more seriously again. Thai authorities have run publicised crackdowns with hundreds of arrests in a single week.

Why this catches people out

Thailand's position is genuinely unusual. Vaping is legal or lightly regulated across much of the world, so visitors arrive without it occurring to them that a device in their bag is contraband. It is not a grey area here and it is not a formality.

The gap between expectation and reality is the whole problem. Nobody flies to Bangkok intending to break the law; they simply do not know this one exists.

If you smoke, conventional cigarettes are legal and widely sold, subject to the usual restrictions on where you can smoke.
