Paying in Bangkok — Cash, Card or QR

Carry cash for a night out. Bangkok looks cashless because locals pay for almost everything by scanning a QR code, but that system runs on Thai bank accounts and is not generally available to a short-term visitor. Cards work in malls, hotels and larger restaurants. Street food, taxis, market stalls and plenty of club doors want notes.

Why it looks cashless and is not, for you

Watch anyone local pay and they will scan a QR code — at a market stall, a coffee shop, a street vendor. That is Thailand's domestic transfer system, and it is genuinely universal here.

It is also generally tied to a Thai bank account, which a visitor on a short trip will not have. So the cashless Bangkok you can see is largely not the one available to you, and cash remains the practical answer.
